Disposing of a Refrigerator or Appliance Containing Refrigerant

For University-owned refrigerators, air conditioners or other units containing refrigerant:

  • If the unit is leaking, contact Facilities Management at 360-650-3420 IMMEDIATELY.
  • If the unit works, but you wish to take it out of service, contact Equipment Inventory at 360-650-3566.
  • If the unit does not work, and you wish to dispose of it, contact Facilities Management at 360-650-3420.

They MUST recycle refrigerant before it is disposed. This is a federal law.

For personal refrigerators, air conditioners, or other units containing refrigerant:

  • If a unit is leaking, contact Facilities Management at 360-650-3420 IMMEDIATELY.
  • If you wish to remove a unit from operation, you MUST recycle refrigerant before it is disposed. This is a federal law.
  • For recycling information, call the Whatcom County recycling hotline at 360-676-5723.
  • JACO Environmental will pick up and recycle appliances for a small fee. Contact them at 800-414-5072.
